I wish I knew what the original reason was so I do not repeat it, however, here is one good one:
*solar radiation- incoming long wave radiation from the sun warms the ground which in turn releases energy and warms the air around it (terrestrial radiation) through such processes as conduction and convection. You can quantify this through use of the solar constant which gives an ideal estimate of how much energy the Earth absorbs from the Sun per unit area.
