Could i use a dimmer switch to control the temperature on an under tank heater for a snake?

yes.and you can measure the exact temp. with a infer red temp gun.Could i use a dimmer switch to control the temperature on an under tank heater for a snake?
If you're talking about something like a table lamp dimmer, then yes, you could use that. But if you're looking for something to control the amount of heat coming out of a UTH, I would suggest getting a reptile intended Rheostat/Thermostat. You can try looking for those at a pet store or maybe a reptile-specific store (if they exist where you live). If obtaining a rheostat/thermostat is not an option, then the table lamp dimmer will suffice.

Also, the information that travisandadrienne67 gave you is slightly misinformed. You do not need a heat lamp for your snake. A heat lamp will only result to drying out the air in the snake's tank which will ultimately result in bad sheds for your snake. Snakes primarily rely on BELLY heat for food digestion, so a heat lamp would be extremely unnecessary.Could i use a dimmer switch to control the temperature on an under tank heater for a snake?
I don't see why not. It makes sense that it would. Similar to %26amp; exactly like a heat control on a soldering iron. I plug my iron into a heat control box that is governed by a dial. The lower the dial, the less electricity %26amp; cooler the heat source.

You would need to be careful that the dial cannot be turned up too high. (by accident)? It'll fry your critter.

Keep a close watch on the actual heat that is coming form the heater. Keep a little log at first so you know where on the dial you get the right consistent temperature.

Make sure you are doing the wiring right so it don't short out %26amp; cause a problem.

I also tried doing this with a waterbed heater cause the switch went out. It didn't work. The heating pad shorted out %26amp; it burnt the wood under the pad %26amp; full matress but never melted the bladder.

Just keep a close, close eye at first. Should work.
NO ! Keep the under tank heater plugged in at all times, you should also have a heat lamp on that same side. You can put a timer on that. Make sure that ur snakes branch or spot it likes, is on the hot side and place the water dish on the opposite side.
it wouldn't give you a set temperature, but it would control the amount of heat the heater puts out.
