In what ways can geographic position be considered a temperature control?

Latitude is a dertmining factor in how much energy a place receives from the sun. The most enrgy is received from the sun when the sun's rays hit the location at a 90 degree angle. The only location that ever happens is betweeen 23.5 degrees north and 23.5 degrees south---Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. That being said, there are some locations within this area that have lower temperatures due to elevation.

Also, a location's proximity to a large body of water plays a role in temperature control. Bodies of water have a mediating effect on the surrounding land. That means the land is cooler in summer and warmer in winter than lands not mediated by bodies of water.
